Is now a good time to purchase a home?
In my opinion, if you are planning to move again in the next couple of years, it may well make more sense to rent. If you are planning to live in the home, or keep it as a rental for the long term, then there are some real opportunities.
There is a great combination of low interest rates and lots of homes on the market right now. There seem to be a number of "potential buyers" who are trying to time the market and are concerned that it may go down further. It may, it may not. Timing the bottom of any market is pretty much impossible until you see it in hindsight -- so again, if you are thinking of selling again in the next year or two, then seriously consider renting.
But for those in it for the long term, this is your chance to purchase while sellers are motivated and you have less competition from other buyers. That translates to more negotiating power for you. When everyone starts buying again, that negotiation edge is going to diminish. Plus, you will have spent more time not living in that new home!
Each person has to come to their own opinion, but here is some "food for thought"...
